Sept. 23, 2003
An adult plumage American White pelican, most likely a Tropical storm Isabel
vagrant, was seen earlier today flying low over the Hillman Marsh Visitor
Centre viewing stand (ie. the barn with the large Great blue heron mural)
located just outside of Leamington, Ontario at around 5:10 pm EST. Hillman
Marsh may be reached by driving 15 minutes east of Point Pelee National Park
by turning right immediately after leaving the park onto North Dyke road.
Continue on this road for approximately 3 kilometers until it curves to the
right and turn left, going north, as this becomes Mersea Road 19. Continue
north on this road for approximately 5 kilometers until you reach a
T-intersection. At this intersection continue 0.3 kilometers onto Essex
Road 37. Continue 1.4 kilometers until the road ends at a T-intersection
with Mersea Road 2. Make a right turn onto Road 2 and then turn right
several hundred meters beyond at the entrance to the Hillman Marsh
Conservation Area.
The pelican was heading in a northwestern direction toward Leamington, but
following closely along the waterways when it disappeared over the horizon
and out of our sight. This bird was spotted by Dave Jolly and Jan Barnett
of EARTHQUEST (Canada). You may contact the observers (email prefered) at;
