At 9:00pm, Thursday, September 18th, 2003, this is the Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The Hotline is normally revised on Thursday, unless an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.
There is much buzz around the pending arrival of Hurricane Isabel, which should breeze through our area starting later tonight. Hurricanes often blow in oceanic species which are rarely seen in the Great Lakes basin. After the storm, be sure to get out and take a walk along the lakeshore and/or beach to see what turns up. Now on to the birds... The AMERICAN AVOCET was still hanging around the small pond south of Guelph as recently as Wednesday morning. Directions are as follows: take the 401 to the Highway 6 North exit, at the first lights on Highway 6 north, turn left and proceed to County Road 35, turn left on County Road 35 and proceed (south) for about 1km. Look for the farm with two blue silos. Other shorebirds seen locally include GREAT YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, KILLDEER, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, WESTERN SANDPIPER and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER at the Grimsby Sewage Lagoons. Out of town, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, and STILT SANDPIPER turned up at the Townsend Sewage Lagoons. Birds seen from Van Wagner's Beach this past week include PARASITIC JAEGER on Friday night, and BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE on Sunday. Other local reports were of six COMMON NIGHTHAWKS over King's Forest, SCARLET TANAGER, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, MERLIN and AMERICAN KESTREL at Court Cliff Park, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, COMMON MOORHEN, RED-EYED VIREO, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, AMERICAN REDSTART, NASHVILLE WARBLER, and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at Valley Inn, plus COOPER'S HAWK, OSPREY, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, GREY-CHEEKED THRUSH, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, NASHVILLE WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, and PINE WARBLER on the North Shore Trails at RBG. That's all for this week. Be sure to let us know about your sightings. Leave your name, telephone number, as well as the time and date of your call. Sightings can also be reported by e-mail.
