Northern Ontario, 1st Edition.This is a copy of the Sept. 8, '03 KFN Phone Line script, with added detail for locations: AMHERST I. [page 36, quad E54 & E55] Bruce Ripley reported for Sept. 5: "Bruce Ripley, Bud Rowe and Joel Ellis spotted 17 species of shorebirds. Highlights include 3 possibly 4 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, 1 RED KNOT, 1 STILT SANDPIPER, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and 15 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS." On Sept. 7, a number of us including an Ottawa group led by Bruce Di Labio birded Amherst I. birded the Island. Bruce Di Labio reported: "There was a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER at the east end of Amherst Island on the K.F.N. property. The BUFF-BREASTED was feeding in a dry area along the edge of the first pond. Shorebird watching was excellent with a total of 18 species including 3 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 2 RED KNOT, 6 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 3 DUNLIN, 5 STILT SANDPIPER and 19 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. On the gravel point there was an impressive flock of 103 COMMON TERN resting along with 27 CASPIAN TERN. On the drive down to the east end of the island an adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was observed fly-catching from a telephone pole along Front Rd. past the cemetery. NORTHERN HARRIERS were numerous, 18 being seen on the island. The "Owl Woods" had a number of warblers including 3 PALM and 3 BLACKPOLL but no owls yet." DIRECTIONS: The ferry to Amherst I. leaves from a dock at the western side of Millhaven. It is reached from the 401 by taking exit 593 south to Millhaven. Jog right about 100 m. On Hwy 33 to the dock. The ferry costs $5.00 Cdn return and starts at 6:20 a.m. Then 7:30 and thereafter on the half hour. The KFN property is on the east side of the Lower Road. CHAFFEY'S LOCK , OPINICON RD. [page 36, quad Z57] & [page 36, quads A56, 57] Bruce Di Labio reported for Sept. 6th: "I birded the Chaffey's Lock area. Surprisingly, it sounded more like spring than fall! There were still a number of birds singing including YELLOW-THROATED VIREOS, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER and CERULEAN WARBLER. Most birds were seen and heard opposite to the Skycroft Campground area. At least nine YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 3 GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER and 1 CERULEAN WARBLER were recorded. Also there were numerous singing EASTERN WOOD PEWEE, RED-EYED VIREOS, one BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER and one COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. Two RUFFED GROUSE were heard drumming. PRINCE EDWARD POINT [page 35, quads G52 & G53] The following significant sightings from Erwin Batalla were overlooked in the last few weeks' reports. They are significant for the records: Erwin reported for Saturday Aug. 30: "We arrived at 7:45 a. m. About 30 minutes earlier, one of the bird-banders at the point had seen a POMARINE JAEGER. We had: CANADA & BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS & BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER." OTHER SIGHTINGS Pauline Hockey reported for Sept. 5, "I walked the Foot of the Rideau Trail this morning, from King Street, for an hour. Quite a lot of WARBLERS. MAGNOLIA, 4 or more; REDSTART, 2; NASHVILLE, 1; COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, 1; BLACK-AND-WHITE, 2; WILSON'S, 2; BAY-BREASTED, 1; NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, 1."
