Migration Watch at Port Burwell PP
September 7, 2003

This morning, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, 12 visitors and campers joined us to count hawks, passerines, butterflies and dragonflies migrating past Port Burwell PP.

Highlights included 55 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 52 American Kestrels, 3 Osprey, 289 Monarchs, 237 American Goldfinches, 2 Common Nighthawks and 30 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. On the beach were 6 adult Little Gulls, 100s of Bonaparte's Gulls and Common Terns, 2 Sanderlings and 1 Black-bellied Plover. Our Monarch butterfly count was only a tiny portion of the large numbers of Monarchs moving west along the Lake Erie shoreline today.

The interpretive migration watch will be held for the next 5 Sundays including Oct 12 and one Sat [Sept 27] from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Port Burwell PP is on the Lake Erie shoreline west of Long Point and south of Tillsonburg at the east end of Elgin County. The migration watch is at parking lot # 5 in the day-use/beach portion of the park.
Cost: Park entry fee ($6.00) or use your Ontario Parks season's pass.
