Naish McHugh, Toronto. [EMAIL PROTECTED] I was at the Spit today, from 8. a.m. until about noon. While there I teamed up with a new young birder called Tom Gale. We were not aware that an Avocet had been reported. We went into Peninsular 'C' and to the shore on the westerly side (as described by Paul Prior), and scanning the shoreline between there and Peninsular 'B' we noted several Lesser, Semipalmated and Spotted Sandpipers feeding amongst the washed up weeds at the water's edge. Just a few feet into the water at the westerly end of the ch an adult American Avocet was walking about feeding. We had several good looks at this bird from various locations on the trail behind the willows that border the beach, as this was a 'Life' bird for Tom. We then went back to the road and down the access road to the easterly side of Peninsular 'B'. By this time the Avocet had worked it's way easterly along the shoreline and was just about at the location that we had been, when we had first seen it. Coming out to the road, we met a Birder who we told about the Avocet, but he had already heard that one had been reported and was glad for our directions. We also noticed a Common Nighthawk roosting on the top of the 4th concrete hydro pole along the access road of Pen. 'B' from the paved road. This all occurred between about 10.15 a.m. and 10.45 a.m. Naish McHugh. Directions. Take the bus (Sat., Sun. and Mon.) to the bridge. Cross the bridge and walk to the 2nd trail on the right side of the paved road, near the Portable Toilet. Take this trail through the clearing that has one pic-nic table in it, continue straight on through the trees, then take the left branch of the sandy trail to the westerly side, which comes out at the water's edge. This is the westerly side of Peninsular 'C'. Look along the shoreline to the left across to Pen. 'B'. To access Pen. 'B' take the next trail from the paved road, on the right hand side.Take the right angle bend to the right when you can see the Cormorant nesting area and proceed to the water's edge. This is the easterly side of Pen. 'B'. Look straight across, past the two, near, small islands, along the shoreline over to Pen.'C'.
