OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE MONDAY AUGUST 25 AT 12:00
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
An EARED GREBE in moulting adult plumage was discovered on the
morning August 23 in the eastern cell of the Alfred sewage
lagoons. Please remember that access to the Alfred lagoons
requires a permit from the township office in Alfred. Call 613-
679-2292 for more information.
On the morning of 24th, along Denholm Rd off the Low-Poltimore Rd
in Québec there was an Olive-sided Flycatcher. On the 22nd, at a
large pond on the east side of Moodie Dr, south of the Trail Rd
landfill, there were 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES along with 3 Greater
and 12 Lesser Yellowlegs, and 3 Pectoral Sandpipers. The
phalaropes were not subsequently reported but many more Lesser
Yellowlegs, 1 Semipalmated Plover and 2 Semipalmated Sandpipers
were here on the 24th.
On the 19th, a Northern Mockingbird was seen north of the town of
Russell on Eadie Rd, approximately 1 km south of Burton Rd. This
location is just southeast of exit 96 off highway 417.
On the 17th, at the High Falls Conservation Area in Casselman,
numerous Lesser Yellowlegs were still present as well 4
Semipalmated Plovers, 3 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 Solitary Sandpiper,
1 Sanderling and 6 each of Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers and 2
Baird's Sandpipers. Solitary Sandpipers and Green Herons were
also reported from both Beechwood Cemetery and Rideau Valley Rd on
the 14th.
Otherwise birding in the Ottawa area remains somewhat in the
doldrums. The Ottawa River and most of the eastern lagoons are
still high with little shorebird habitat and there have been few
migrant songbirds in the traditional migrant traps such as the
Britannia Conservation Area and Shirley's Bay.
At Britannia on the 22nd, 3 adult and 1 juvenile Black-crowned
Night-Herons were observed. From the 16th to the 25th at
Britannia, Canada, Cape May, Bay-breasted and Magnolia Warblers
were found among a few others including Yellow-rumped, Black-
throated Green, Black-and-white and Common Yellowthroat. A Great
Horned Owl was in Britannia on the 24th and a Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher was evidently at Shirley's Bay on the weekend as well.
The OFNC annual seedathon is coming on September 7 to raise funds
for the clubs bird feeders. To make a pledge, please contact Bob
Bracken by phone at 728-3495 or Chris Lewis by e-mail at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] . For more information on the
seedathon, please visit the OFNC web site.
Thank-you, good birding.
