Good Evening Birders

This evening between 7:30 and 8:30 Mary Schuster and I counted 35 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS flying over the Bayview and Davisville area. Apparently they were first reported on the Toronto hotline last Thursday night, which would make this day 4 of the migration. Mary saw about 15 last night.

Also of possible interest for Peterborough area birders, early this morning I found a SOLITARY SANDPIPER in Jackson Creek on the west side of Akison Rd. This is where the railway trail crosses Akison Rd, between Lily Lake Road to the north and Parkhill Dr. to the south. There were no other shorebirds around, but the water level is low and there is mud, so this area might bear watching.

On the way from Peterborough to Toronto late this morning I stopped off at Port Hope in search of the BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER. I was unsuccessful here. By the time I got there, (about 1030am) there was so much heat haze, I think it could easily have been overlooked. There were a few other birders there at the same time, and as far as I know, nobody located it.

Directions to the sod farms at Port Hope as previously posted:

Directions: From Hwy 401 take the Welcome/Port Hope exit, Exit 461, and go
north on Hwy.2 to the first traffic lights. Turn east on Dale Road, County
Road 74, for 1.5 km and turn north on Sylvan Glen Road.
Hawkins Road runs up the east side of the sod farm about 200m east of Sylvan
Glen Road and is sometimes the better viewing spot.

Good Birding
