At 6:15pm, Thursday, August 21st, 2003, this is the
Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The
Hotline is normally revised on Thursday, unless an
unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.

Fall passerine migration is starting to ramp up.
Observers who were 'out and about' this week reported
seeing more warblers and flycatchers. 

A trip to the Waterdown North Wetland Trails produced
AMERICAN REDSTART, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, CANADA
WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER,
BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, RED-EYED VIREO,
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, RUFFED
GROUSE and an OSPREY. 

Elsewhere, numerous sightings were received from
Courtcliff Park, including BLUE-WINGED WARBLER,
MAGNOLIA WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER,
BLACK & WHITE WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, EASTERN BLUEBIRD,
CEDAR WAXWING, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER, EASTERN PHOEBE, EASTERN KINGBIRD,
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, PURPLE FINCH,
GREEN HERON, GREAT BLUE HERON, BELTED KINGFISHER,
AMERICAN BITTERN, and COOPER'S HAWK.

Other local reports include a MERLIN at Sioux Lookout,
RED-THROATED LOON at Spencer Smith Park, LEAST BITTERN
near Copetown, and EASTERN SCREECH OWL at New Street
and Guelph Line in Burlington. COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were
seen over Burlington, the Dundas Valley, and your
reporter's yard in east Hamilton.

Shorebirds continue to be seen with some regularity.
WILSON'S PHALAROPE, RUDDY TURNSTONE, LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, SANDERLING, and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER
were reported from the Grimsby Sewage Lagoons, and a
trip to the north shore of Lake Erie yielded 12
species including WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER at Grabell Point, BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVER at Morgan's Point, and a pair of GREAT EGRETS
at Stonemill Road. 

Last but not least, highlights of banding at Selkirk
Provincial Park this past week were a PROTHONOTARY
WARBLER and a NORTHERN HARRIER.
