At 4:00pm, Thursday, July 10th, 2003, this is the Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The Hotline is normally revised on Thursday nights, unless an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.
The best sighting of the week was a possible BOAT-TAILED GRACKLE or GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE seen briefly over the weekend in St. Catharines. Unfortunately, follow up searches were unsuccessful, but the Hotline will be updated if a confirmed sighting is made. This week's reports are scattered and varied. Here is a rundown of locations and the birds reported there during the past week: Grimsby Sewage Lagoons - SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST SANDPIPER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, and a juvenile SORA RAIL. Courtcliff Park - BLUE-GRAY GNATCATHCER and CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER. Kerncliff Park - SOLITARY SANDPIPER, GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATHCER, and two (possibly three) pairs of VIRGINIA RAILS. Curry Tract - INDIGO BUNTING, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, SCARLET TANAGER, VEERY, WOOD THRUSH, PINE WARBLER, RED-EYED VIREO, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. The Hermitage, Ancaster - TUFTED TITMOUSE (with young), EASTERN PHOEBE, EASTERN WOOD PEWEE, INDIGO BUNTING, and a pair of COOPER'S HAWKS. Other local reports include OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER on Twiss Road, BREWSTER'S WARBLER on the Dundas Valley Rail Trail, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON and PINE WARBLER at LaSalle Park, OSPREY in the Hendrie Valley, four RED-THROATED LOONS and a GREAT EGRET at Confederation Park, plus a pair of COOPER'S HAWKS with young on the west side of Gage Park. Out of town, a good number and variety of shorebirds turned up at Rock Point Provincial Park, including SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, LEAST SANDPIPER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, KILLDEER, and CAROLINA WREN. Be sure to let us know about your sightings this week. Leave your name, telephone number, as well as the time and date of your call. Sightings can also be reported by e-mail. GOOD BIRDING!
