Today at least 3 times I drove by the place listed yesterday for the Upland
Sandpipers - starting around noon, then about 2:00 and finally saw them in
the area about 4:00 p.m. Saw the first adult on a post on the south side of
5th Ave. just west of 3rd St. - then it flew to the north side of the road,
and soon was joined by a female and 3 'babies' that came up out of the tall
grass by the side of the road. By the time I left they had all crossed the
road to the south side field. There was also one other adult on the edge of
that southwest field sitting on another fence post farther west.
While waiting for the sandpipers to make an appearance I drove north on
3rd St. and just north of the railroad tracks pulled off the road on the
east side. In the trees by the tracks I saw a Gold Finch - and briefly saw
another golden breasted bird with an olive back that was larger than a finch
- possibly a YB Chat?
When I crossed the barrier where the bulldozer is parked and walked in a
ways - I saw some Killdeer, Mourning Doves, a Spotted Sandpiper, a Purple
Finch, and a Bobolink on the ground around the puddles in the road.
Directions:
>From QEW take the Seventh St. exit and go south on it to Fifth Ave.
Turn left (east) and proceed to Third St. As you're driving past the fields
approaching 3rd St., scan the fence posts and edges of the road esp. on the
south side ( but possibly on the north side as well ) west of the
intersection of Fifth Ave. and Third St.
