AMHERST I.
Darby Bayly reported a GREAT EGRET on the KFN Property on June 10.
Matthew Koch on June 12 reported on the KFN Property: At the KFN Property at
the eastern extremity of Amherst Island: "I saw nothing earthshaking: the
most noteworthy sightings were a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, at least two RUDDY
TURNSTONES, and a BRANT mingling with abundant CANADA GEESE. I saw at least
two COMMON and a number of CASPIAN
TERNS, but BLACK TERNS continued to be absent. Other birds present included
a GREAT EGRET, an AM. BITTERN, a secretive BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, a
BELTED KINGFISHER, a WILSON'S SNIPE, a DUNLIN, a LEAST SANDPIPER, many
SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, CLIFF SWALLOWS, PURPLE MARTINS, two AM. WIGEON, at least
2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 3 SHOVELER, a PINTAIL, a pair of GADWALL accompanied by
a number of ducklings, 6 WILSON'S PHALAROPE and 2 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS.
DIRECTIONS: The ferry to Amherst I. leaves from a dock at the western side
of Millhaven. It is reached from the 401 by taking exit 593 south to
Millhaven. Jog right about 100 m. On Hwy 33 to the dock. The ferry costs
$5.00 Cdn return and starts at 6:20 a.m. Then 7:30 and thereafter on the
half hour. The KFN property is on the east side of the Lower Road [page 36,
quad E55]
OTHER SIGHTINGS
Colin Selby reported on June 15: "We spent an hour plus on Nugent Rd. [page
35, quad C53] on June 15th looking for SHRIKES but to no avail. We did see
at least 3 and probably 4 N. MOCKINGBIRDS. Two were very close to us on the
road - about 50 feet - and were doing their wing display "thing". The other
one (two?) was back in the field."
Recent Sightings at 14 The Point Rd., Cartwright Point [page 36, quad D 56],
{page 48 & 49, quads N20 & M21} YELLOW-THROATED VIREO on June 13 and again
on June 18, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO on June 16, a dead owlet found on our lawn,
June 17.
