Hello all: A new atlassing opportunity has come up. This is for 2-4 people, who will have the use of a cabin on the mainland adjacent to the community of Webequie in far northern Ontario (53 degrees North) on the southern edge of the Hudson Bay Lowland. Webequie is on an island in Winisk Lake, from which the Winisk River flows north across the Lowland.
The cabin is available during the period July 9-20, and we would like people to do atlas work there for about one week of that period. We are currently checking into subsidized flights, which might dictate which actual days the trip should take place during that period. So far, one person has expressed interest for the period July 13-20. The cost of the flights between Thunder Bay and Webequie will be covered by the atlas. There is a hiking trail nearby, with links to a winter road that allows extensive access. There is also considerable access via canoe and motor boat. The cost of gas for motor boats or renting canoes, will be covered by the atlas. The cabin is new, and has cooking facilites. The atlassers must provide their own food. Atlassers would be asked to help teach one or two local people the english names of birds, and provide an annotated list of the species observed and assess which species and sites might be of interest to birders for ecotourism possibilities. If you're knowledgeable about other groups (plants, herps, butterflies, etc.) so much the better. At least one in every two applicants for this position (and preferably all applicants) should be an experienced birder able to identify northern birds well by sight and sound, and able to do point counts in the area. They should also be experienced in working in remote areas, and in northern conditions. If you're qualified, interested and available, or would like more information, please contact me asap.
