Western Meadowlark at Ingersoll, Oxford County
June 14, 2003
The Western Meadowlark found by Ted Maddeford earlier today was present at
5:30 p.m. this afternoon when checked by Ross Snider and Terry Ricker and
still present at 9:00 p.m. this evening when we arrived.
The bird has been seen and heard ranging in the extensive tall and short
grass fields and lawns between the Traveller's Lodge and the CAMI auto
plant It was first reported in a field next to the Traveller's Lodge
along Culloden Road. We found it singing from the top of a tree at the
corner of Ingersoll Road and Thompson Road at 9:00 p.m. but it flew ~200
metres to the north towards the CAMI plant and was still foraging on the
lawn when we left at about 9:15 p.m.
Directions:
Exit Hwy 401 at Ingersoll onto Culloden Road and go north 200 metres or so
on Culloden. Traveler's Lodge is to your right (east). Turn left
immediately onto Ingersoll Road. You will see the huge CAMI auto assembly
plant in front of you. Thompson Road is another 200 metres or so. You may
have to drive west along Thompson and listen from time to time or north
along Ingersoll Road doing the same. Be careful though, there are NO
Parking signs all along Ingersoll Road. The bird was singing constantly
when we were there and can be heard from a long distance (500+ metres ) and
so the best strategy might be to park along Thompson at first to determine
where it is calling from before attempting to get closer.
