OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE SATURDAY MAY 31
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
The cold, wet weather conditions of this past week no doubt
accounted for the few bird reports.
From the Embrun sewage lagoons this morning, a rare bird alert was
prematurely initiated for a WESTERN SANDPIPER. The observer, Bob
Bracken, who tentatively identified this bird, wishes to apologize
for the false alarm. Upon closer scrutiny, the bird turned out to
be a brightly plumaged female Semipalmated Sandpiper. Also
present at Embrun today were Blue-winged Teal, a couple of pairs
of Northern Shoveler and Gadwall, 5 Least Sandpipers, 2 Dunlin and
at least 10 Wilson's Phalaropes. On the 30th, there were also 2
Black Terns, 4 Semipalmated Sandpipers and 1 White-rumped
Sandpiper at this location.
From the Ottawa River this afternoon, approximately 120 Brant were
seen flying west up the river from Britannia. 11 male White-
winged Scoters were on lac Deschenes and there were a total of 18
first summer Bonaparte's Gulls among countless thousands of Ring-
billed Gulls on the river at the Deschenes Rapids.
A mass emergence of Mayflies occurred this weekend and should
continue through the first two weeks of June. Now is a good time
of year to check for interesting gulls and terns.
Early this morning, a report from the Carp Hills, southwest of
Dunrobin, along the Thomas Dolan Parkway, shortly after Stonecrest
Rd, included both Alder and Willow Flycatchers, a singing male
Golden-winged Warbler and several eastern Towhees.
On the 30th at Shirley's Bay, there was 1 Common Tern, and a Marsh
Wren and Wilson's Warbler were singing at the marsh between the
Nortel complex and the Equestrian Park west of Moodie Dr. A Least
Bittern was heard in the same marsh on May 25.
In other recent news, only one of the 4 Peregrine Falcon eggs on
the Crowne Plaza Hotel hatched. The sole chick appears to be
doing well so far. The Peregrine watch has been scheduled to
start on June 21.
And finally, the Taverner Cup birding competition was held last
Saturday, May 24. The winners of the competitive category found
161 species. The recreational category winners had a total of
122.
Thank-you. Good birding.
