Hi,
Large numbers of migrating warblers, flycatchers and thrushes stopped in
Thickson's Woods overnight and spent the day actively feeding. While the
warblers were predominantly females in most species (except Wilson's, Canada
and mourning), both thrushes and flycatchers were quite vocal.
Species diversity among warblers was lower than earlier in May, but
numbers were impressive. (magnolia-35, redstart-25, Wilson's-20,
yellowthroat-18, black-throated blue-12, yellow-15, mourning-8, ovenbird-6,
blackpoll-2, black-and-white-1)
There were at least 40 Swainson's thrushes, many unusually colourful and
heavily spotted. One or more were singing most of the time. Gray-cheeked
thushes (10) were less vocal, but very active and easily seen. Perhaps half
a dozen veeries and two or three wood thushes were also seen.
Yellow-bellied flycatchers (9) were quite vocal as well, as were eastern
wood pewees (17) and
willow/alder flycatchers. (25) Three least flycatchers were seen, and one
was heard singing.
A pair of scarlet tanagers in a blossoming apple tree, a white-crowned
sparrow eating dandelion seeds on a lawn and a Lincoln's sparrow hopping
along a log were also seen.
Nearby wet fields produced semi-palmated sandpipers and plovers, and
dunlin.
To reach Thickson's Woods exit from 401 to Thickson Road South in
Whitby. Proceed south past Wentworth Street to the Waterfront Trail. Turn
left, turn around and park on the north side of the road. Enter the woods
on a path from
the south side, about 200 metres east of Thickson Road. Follow the trails
through the woods, some of which access the Lake Ontario shore. To view the
beaver pond and Corbett Creek Marsh continue east about 100 metres past the
entrance to the woods. The meadow is across the Waterfront Trail
immediately north of the woods. The entrance is directly across the
waterfront trail from the entrance to the woods. To view a map,
