It was finally a nice day at Point Pelee today, little to no wind, warm temperature to 17c, although heavy fog early in the morning. The only evidence of any migration overnight was for Cedar Waxwings. While there were several flocks with a total of about 30 birds in the Park on Saturday there were thousands of Waxwings in the Park on Sunday, all the way from the Tip to Blue Heron.
On the Tip after the fog lifted were 6 Ruddy Turnstones, 5 Dunlin, 1 Sanderling in breeding plumage, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, 7 Caspian Terns, a pair of Forster's Terns doing a little ritual of passing a fish back and forth between them, lots of Common Terns, Bonaparte's, Ring-billed, Herring, and Greater Black-back Gulls. A Little Gull was seen early in the a.m., but flew east along the East Beach (perhaps towards Wheatley Harbour) at approximately 9:30. A flock of 36 Whimbrels passed along the west beach shortly thereafter. They were well out from shore and heading north. Warblers were few and far between, although there were still 9 species spread out through the Park, including Blackburnian, Wilsons, Black-throated Green, Am. Redstart and Magnolia. Several each of Red-eyed Vireo and Warbling Vireo were on the tram road between the half-way point and the tip and a Red-headed woodpecker flew overhead. Also going up and down the main road was a Cooper's Hawk. A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was reported in DeLaurier. Ten Black Terns were sitting in and flying around the centre pond of the marsh boardwalk A half dozen Swamp Sparrows were sitting up and singing, but no sight or sound of Marsh Wren so far this year. Tickets for the Quest donated Antarctic tour, the Bushnell donated optics package and other goodies in support of the Keep the Songs Alive campaign of the Friends of Point Pelee are still available. The draw takes place on Saturday, May 31st, so you still have time to buy a ticket or three.
