Report for May 25, 2003 (Sunday): For the first time in perhaps 10 days, the woods at Rondeau were alive with singing birds this morning. Most birders visited South Point Trail, where there were a lot of migrants Mourning Warbler (numerous), Clay-colored Sparrow, Whjte-eyed Vireo (several), Blue-winged Warbler (three), Northern Parula, Yellow-throated Vireo, Wilsons Warbler (many), Canada Warbler (many), Bay-breasted and Blackpoll Warblers (several), and Eastern Bluebird (female). Some early spring migrants were also seen, including Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-rumped Warbler, White-throated Sparrow and White-crowned Sparrow.
YESTERDAY (May 24) a Yellow-breasted Chat was seen on the road (Harrison Trail) between Maintenance and the Pony Barns (east side of road). At the head of Rondeau Bay (outside park gatest), there were both Mute Swan (4) and Tundra Swan (2). EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE no reported sightings since early yesterday. This is the time to watch for locks of migrating Whimbrels, often seen wheeling over Lake Erie. Typically they are seen late in the day, often an hour or two before sunset. Prothonotary Warbler sightings have been regular at both Tulip Tree Trail and Bennett Road.
