Report for May 24, 2003 (Saturday):

No more east winds! Although the winds this morning were from the south, it
remains rather cool. Birders at South Point encountered small numbers of
migrants -- but an excellent variety -- including warblers. Some of the later
spring migrants are starting to kick in, but early migrants such as Yellow-
rumped Warblers are still present. With the change of the weather, the next
few days should be interesting – in particular, watch for big flocks of
Whimbrels wheeling over Lake Erie.

Seen this morning along South Point Trail were Cerulean Warbler (female),
Mourning Warbler (3 singing males), Blackpoll Warbler (3 singing males) and
several Wilson’s and Canada Warblers, etc.

Today’s Highlights (May 24):

EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE – seen this morning flying around South Point (Steve
Charbonneau). The bird was also HEARD about (10) days ago, so apparently it
never left. However, there are many locations where this bird could pop up,
including one of the many dozens of feeders that are scattered along Lakeshore
Road.

Connecticut Warbler --- one at South Point Trail.

Prothonotary Warbler – sightings have been regular at both Tulip Tree Trail and
Bennett Road.

Eastern Screech-Owl – one continues to sit in the open opposite the entrance to
Spicebush Trail. Enquire at Visitor Centre as to directions.
