This morning birders were greeted to strong NE winds and clear skies, the result of a cold front that passed through the area. In such conditions the Tip area is often poor for birds, and this was the case this morning. With north winds, the north part of the Park is often more active, and it was reported that Sanctuary Picnic Area had lots of warblers. Tilden's Woods was also active with a good variety of migrant species. With the north winds, everyone is hoping today for a "kite" or other hawk species.
Highlights reported this morning include: SUMMER TANAGER (immature male) - opposite Staff Housing, which is well south of Blue Heron Picnic Area PROTHONOTARY WARBLER (female) -- Woodland Nature Trail Yesterday's update (May 20): LAUGHING GULL (adult) -- in addition to the bird at the Tip, one was found on the beach on the east side of Wheatley Harbour. It is probable that two different birds are involved. Connecticut Warbler -- Loop Woods adjacent to the Tip train loop. Summer Tanager -- Loop Woods Henslow's Sparrow -- the bird at the west side of the Tip (north of the paved loop) was observed throughout the afternoon. Sedge Wren -- Tip (just south of the main shelter) BIRD PHOTOS: The next issue of *Point Pelee Natural History News* will include many more photographs than usual, since many interesting species were captured on film this spring (March to May inclusive).
