Report for May 17, 2003 (Saturday):

East winds are keeping much of Rondeau on the cool side today. Subsequently
most migrants are rather scattered. However, there is a wide variety of
migrants present including warblers.

Today’s highlights include the following:

BLUE GROSBEAK -- The female bird is again present on South Point Trail – take
Lakeshore Road south to where it ends, walk about 1 km south until you reach a
bench on the beach – the bird habitually feeds in the tall dune grasses. The
bird appears to be getting more difficult to locate each day, as it tends to
wander more frequently.

PROTHONOTARY WARBLER – today there were at least four birds reported, with two
on Tulip Tree Trail, one on Spicebush Trail, and one along Bennett Road.

KENTUCKY WARBLER — one on Tulip Tree Trail.

On the scheduled hike last night (May 16) along Marsh Trail, there was a
minimum of four singing Sedge Wrens, plus Sandhill Crane, Bald Eagle and Whip-
poor-will. Remarkably, four trips out into the marsh this spring have failed
to record a single rail or American Bittern.
