Pelee Island Highlights today… -NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD – Fish Point. -A new wave of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS arrived overnight along with several other warblers including many BLACKBURNIANS. -A flock of 25 BOBOLINKS was seen flying south off the tip of Fish Point. -20 LESSER YELLOWLEGS – Henderson Rd. fields -GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2, LEAST SANDPIPERS, 2 – Lighthouse Pt -A male BLUE-WINGED WARBLER at Sheridan Pt. was heard singing an odd song: instead of the usual Bee-bzz, it sang a ‘bzz-bzz-bzz-bzz’ followed by a jumbled trill.
More highlights from yesterday: YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, WHITE-EYED VIREO, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, PRAIRIE WARBLER, and WHIP-POOR-WILL. On Sunday, May 4, a LECONTE’S SPARROW and a HAIRY WOODPECKER were seen at Fish Point. ----------------------------------------- Cumulative May total for Pelee Island: 149 species ----------------------------------------- There will be daily bird hikes on Pelee Island until at least May 20. Cost $4.00 includes admission to Heritage Centre. Inquire at Centre at foot of West Dock for times and locations, and details on best birding areas and current rarities. Lighthouse Point is on the NE corner of the island, Sheridan Point on the NW corner, Mill Point on the SE corner, and Fish Point on the SW corner, due south of the West Dock. Attention Birders: All birders are invited to participate in the Second Annual Pelee Island Bird Race, noon Friday, May 9 to noon Saturday, May 10. 'Springsong' Dinner featuring talk with Farley Mowat, introduced by Margaret Atwood, Saturday evening at the Pelee Island Wine Pavilion (tickets for the dinner sold out).
