Hi All
Just home from a banner day of birding at the Carden Alvar. We heard a
YELLOW RAIL calling briefly from deep in the Sedge Wren Marsh at about 5:30
pm. At about 7:45 we returned to the marsh, and from then until dark we
heard at least 6 individuals calling almost continously from various parts
of the marsh, some quite close to the road. In addition to the Yellow
Rails, we also had AMERICAN BITTERN, VIRGINIA RAIL, WILSON'S SNIPE and
AMERICAN WOODCOCK calling. (Not to mention a million frogs and a large pack
of cayotes). As we returned to our car a RUFFED GROUSE was feeding in the
trees over the car. Other birds of interest along Wylie Road through the
day were EASTERN BLUEBIRD, UPLAND SANDPIPER, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, and a lone
BROAD-WINGED HAWK.
Directions (from Jean Iron's post)
From Kirkfield on Highway 48 east of Lake Simcoe, proceed north on County
Road 6. At 2.6 km past the Kirkfield Lift Lock, turn right (east) on
McNamee Road where County Road 6 turns sharply to the left. Then turn left
almost immediately on Wylie Road. Proceed north.
