There are only THREE more seasons in which to contribute to the atlas. Here are 10 suggestions as to why you should, and 10 ways in which you can, get involved. For more information, please see the atlas web page (www.birdsontario.org) or call us toll free at 1-866-900-7100.
Ten reasons to become part of the atlas 1. Its easy - there are many ways to participate for people of all skill levels (see below). 2. Your participation will make the project better we need you to be part of the Atlas. 3. Its fun and challenging, and helps develop your birding skills (including a free CD-ROM for atlassers). 4. Atlassing requires you to watch birds more closely, so youll learn more about their breeding behaviour and life histories. 5. It provides valuable data for bird research and conservation, Species at Risk, and environmental conservation generally. 6. The data are already showing fascinating changes in bird distribution and status (see maps on the web page.) 7. It takes you to interesting places (some in or near your own back yard) and organizes subsidized trips to remote areas of the far north. 8. There are many opportunities to atlas with other birders close to home or elsewhere in the province. 9. The Atlas is a big part of our birding legacy and only birders can make the project work. 10. 1200+ other Ontario birders cant be wrong! Ten ways to be part of the atlas 1. Take on, or help out in, one or more 10-km squares. 2. Submit casual records from anywhere in the province. 3. If you know your birds well by song you can do point counts in one or more squares. 4. Go owling. 5. Do standardized owl surveys (10 stops per square). 6. Go on a square bash (group atlassing) in your region. 7. Go on a square bash elsewhere in the province- two planned for 2003 in Killarney and French River Provincial Parks. 8. Participate in a remote trip in northern Ontario. 9. Go on the atlas Volunteer for Nature outing (this year in Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park). 10. Help organize atlas activities in your region. -- Mike Cadman Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas Blackwood Hall, Room 211 University of Guelph Guelph, Ontario, N1G 2W1 Phone: 519-826-2094, Fax: 519-826-2113. e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mike Cadman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Visit http://www.ofo.ca/ontbirdsguide.htm for information on leaving and joining the list.
