This morning while hiking in MacGregor Park Just South of Port Elgin along
the dyke and Tower Trail at the DU Pond I spotted 3 Black Crowned Night
Heron (2 male and 1 female) a first for the year. Also seen were a Great
Egret and 3 Pileated Woodpecker. There were many Golden Crowned Kinglet, a
few Ruby Crowned Kinglet and numerous Brown Creepers in different locations
along the Trail.
To get to the DU pond and Trail follow Highway #21 south of Port Elgin to a
place called North Bruce, turn west and travel down the Townline to wards
the lake. The road becomes a dirt road and barely wide enough for two
vehicles. Approx. 6 km south you will spot the pond on your right (north
side of road). There is a gate with access to the dyke at the east side and
a foot bridge over the ditch on the west side. This is part of MacGregor
Point Provincvial Park and you can hike along the dyke and follow the trail
to the north on the west side of the pond. A short distance in is a viewing
tower.
Coming up at the end of May is the Huron Fringe Birding Festival. The
Friends of MacGregor Park cohost this event with the park. There are lots of
different events palnned, Bird hikes, Butterfly hikes, Wildflowere hikes,
and hikes to cover all aspects of nature too numerous too mention. The
Festival starts on the 23rd May and runs to 1st June 2003 and is the 6th
Annual, so mark it on your calendar. For more information call the park and
talk to Norah Toth at (519) 389-6231 or look on the friends website at
