OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE EASTER SUNDAY April 20 AT 8 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

The weather is rapidly improving and expected migrants continue to
arrive on schedule. A pair of Common Loons was seen on the Ottawa
River from the Deschenes Rapids lookout today. Double-crested
Cormorants arrived at Shirley's Bay on the 15th and on Mud Lake at
the Britannia Conservation Area on the 19th. A Pied-billed Grebe
was at Britannia this weekend and a Horned Grebe along with good
numbers of Ring-necked Ducks, Lesser Scaup, Common Goldeneye,
Bufflehead and Hooded and Common Mergansers were present west of
the Shirley's Bay dyke where the ice is rapidly decreasing. A
reminder, before going onto the dyke, please call Range Control
Office at 991-5740, for permission.

Among the Lesser Scaup at Lakeside Gardens on the 19th, was 2 pair
of Greater Scaup. Northern Shovelers were seen at Mud Lake as
well as at Lakeside Gardens on the 19th, and a male Gadwall was on
the Québec side.

From the 13th, comes a report of a Greater White-fronted Goose and
3 Snow Geese on the Québec side of the Ottawa River at Parker Rd.

Lingering winter waterfowl include the female HARLEQUIN DUCK,
still present at Remic Rapids on the 19th and a female Barrow's
Goldeneye at Remic on the 15th.

Ospreys are back and a pair was at their nest on the Thomas Dolan
Parkway northeast of Dunrobin on the 18th and other sightings were
from Shirley's Bay and on the Ottawa River near Remic Rapids. An
adult and an immature Bald Eagle were seen together at Shirley's
Bay on the 19th. An adult Golden Eagle was reported from the
Luskville area in Québec on the 13th.

A Red-shouldered Hawk was seen near Innes Rd on the 13th and
another at Bill Mason Centre near Dunrobin on the 18th.

Five SANDHILL CRANES were observed flying over the Carlsbad
Springs area on the 13th and a single crane flew over Henry Farm
Drive in Nepean on the 19th.

The first report of Wilson's Snipe was from Bourget on the 14th
and from the Bill Mason Centre on the 18th. Belted Kingfishers
are now present at Britannia Conservation Area and at Shirley's
Bay. Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers and Northern Flickers are now
widespread along with Eastern Phoebes, Tree Swallows, Winter
Wrens, Golden-crowned Kinglets and Ruby-crowned Kinglets.
Kinglets have begun to move through in small numbers in Britannia
and other areas along with a few Yellow-rumped Warblers. On both
the 14th and 15th, a Carolina Wren was singing at the southeast
corner Quincy and Kaymar in Beaconhill. Large numbers of Cedar
Waxwings are now at Britannia and at Shirley's Bay. Fox Sparrows
continue to be reported in small numbers. New arrivals include
Swamp Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows and Savannah Sparrows.
Rusty Blackbirds were reported from various locations near the
Ottawa River since the 15th.

And finally, a BARNACLE GOOSE, of unknown origin, was discovered
on April 20 with approximately 5000 Canada Geese in a field along
Cedarview Rd, across from the entrance to the Log Farm.

Thank-you. Good birding.
