A glorious, albeit with cold west winds at the waterfront, found several
birders picking up some good species to the east of Metro Toronto. For
starters-- 2 adult Coots in the wetlands near the north platform of
Cranberry Marsh in southwest Whitby; there are 2 Fox Sparrows that visit the
feeding station at the entry to the north pathway.
In Thickson's Woods or alongside the roadway-- several Golden-crowned
Kinglets, 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 1 Eastern Phoebe, several Tree Swallows
overhead, Winter Wren, Carolina Wren (singing-1PM), 1 Hermit Thrush, male &
female Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, several Northern Flickers, 2 Belted
Kingfishers and a RUFOUS-SIDED TOWHEE.
At Second Marsh--Bonaparte's Gulls; no doubt there were Little Gulls, but
they wouldn't fly for us!!!; 2 BLE-WINGED TEALS, Green-winged Teal,
CANVASBACK, Pied-billed Grebe, American Wigeon, a few Ring-necked Ducks,
Lesser Scaups, Hooded Mergansers, Buffleheads, Common Mergansers, RUDDY
DUCKS and, overhead--Tree Swallows. The "resident" MOCKINGBIRD sang in the
fields to the south.
