At 6:30pm, Thursday, April 3rd, 2003, this is the
Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The
Hotline is normally revised on Thursday nights, unless
an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area. 

Most of this week's reports come from futher afield,
but locally the following birds were reported: CASPIAN
TERNS at the CCIW, three GREAT BLUE HERONS over Rock
Chapel, COOPER'S HAWK in Dundas, YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER near the Dundas Hydro Station, SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK in the Hopkins Tract, an immature BALD EAGLE near
Middletown Road and the 5th Concession in Flamborough,
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, CAROLINA WREN, NORTHERN
FLICKER, BROWN CREEPER, and WINTER WREN at
Shoreacres/Paletta Park, PILEATED WOODPECKER at
Crawford Lake Conservation Area, a pair of SANDHILL
CRANES at Valens, and an immature KING EIDER at the
foot of Green Road on the Stoney Creek lakeshore. 

Out of town, the Long Point area was well represented
with a EURASION WIGEON at Lee Brown's Pond, 12 LITTLE
GULLS in the bay, VIRGINIA RAIL and SANDHILL CRANE at
Turkey Point marsh, and SONG SPARROW, FIELD SPARROW,
SAVANNAH SPARROW, CHIPPING SPARROW, FOX SPARROW,
EASTERN TOWHEE, EASTERN PHOEBE, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER,
BROWN CREEPER, HERMIT THRUSH, NORTHERN FLICKER,
EASTERN MEADOWLARK, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, WILSON'S
SNIPE, and BONAPARTE'S GULL at various locations.

The Townsend sewage lagoons were also busy with nine
white and three blue phase SNOW GEESE,  200 TUNDRA
SWANS, thousands of CANADA GEESE, RING-NECKED DUCKS,
COMMON MERGANSERS and many other species of waterfowl.
On the Grand River at Cayuga, 46 TURKEY VULTURES were
seen kettling on Sunday, SANDHILL CRANES were reported
from Grass Lake near Glen Morris, and 100
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS were seen on the Niagara
River above the falls near the barge.

New arrivals at Point Pelee this past week include
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, FIELD SPARROW, WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE,
CLIFF SWALLOW, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS,
CHIPPING SPARROW, DUNLIN, TREE SWALLOW, NORTHERN
ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, and BARN SWALLOW.
