detail for locations:
AMHERST I. [Pge 36, Quad't E54 & 55]
Bruce Di Labio visited Amherst Island Mar. 23, reported: "Overall it was
rather quiet and the only open water was along the south shore of the
island. A drive around the perimeter of the island produced few raptors with
6 RED-TAILED and 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and 1 N. HARRIER being found.
Highlights in the "Owl Woods" included 6 LONG-EARED OWLS
and 1 AM. WOODCOCK while 1 SNOWY OWL was observed on the KFN property at the
east end. Due to the ice conditions, ducks were concentrated along the south
shore with 1400 COM. GOLDENEYE, 210 BUFFLEHEAD, 170 RED-BREASTED MERGANSER,
150 LONG-TAILED DUCK, 48 GR. SCAUP, 6 RING-NECKED DUCK, 4 LESSER SCAUP and 2
REDHEAD."
DUPONT POND/CATARAQUI BAY [page 36, quad D56, SW corner], {page 46, Quad
Q12}
Jamie Reid reported on Mar. 21: "Found 3 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 9 TUNDRA SWANS,
8 REDHEADS, 25-30 RING-NECKED DUCKS, a few GREATER SCAUP, 3 AM. COOTS, 1
KILLDEER and a COMMON GRACKLE. Other than the GRACKLE they were all in the
open
water just east of the point inside the breakwall."
Paul Mackenzie reported on Mar. 22: "My first BONAPARTE'S GULL for the year
was at Ivy Lea today. There is open water from the 1000 islands bridge down
to ROCKPORT but no large rafts of ducks. There were about 9 TUNDRA SWANS at
Dupont.
PRINCE EDWARD POINT, [page 35, quad G52 & 53]
Ken Kingdon and Bruce Ripley saw a RED-THROATED LOON Mar. 18, in the Glenora
Ferry channel. The ferry passed the bird without disturbance an they got
within twenty feet. It was probably the same bird reported in the same place
on Mar. 20 by Bud Rowe and Joel Ellis.
WOLFE I. [page 36, quad E56 & 57]
Clare Muller who lives on the Island, reported a MEADOWLARK on Mar. 16 and a
SNOW GOOSE on Mar. 22 flying with a flock of CANADA GEESE.
Eleanor Sachs and I, on Mar. 24, saw 2 TREE SWALLOWS hawking insects over a
field north of Bennetts Rd. and east of 7th Line. There were large numbers
of ducks in the open water between the South Shore Rd. and Carlton I. Bad
atmospheric distortions made scoping the ducks impossible, though 15 SWANS
could be seen (TUNDRA SWAN). I heard a WILSON'S SNIPE winnowing once by the
12th Line. KILLDEER, HORNED LARKS and SONG SPARROWS were everywhere. There
were more HAWKS than last week: 5 ROUGH-LEGGED and 7 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 4 N.
HARRIERS and 5 AM. KESTREL.
Paul Mackenzie on Mar. 22 reported: "Took the 3 p.m. ferry over to Wolfe for
a quick look. Bayfield Bay looked ice covered at first but there is a huge
flock of maybe 3000 GREATER
SCAUP crowded into a long narrow strip of open water at Bayfield bay
(observed by going east to the side road north of the bay, the ducks are
rather far away and require a scope.) . I could only find one CANVASBACK, 2
AMERICAN WIGEON, and some few REDHEADS in the flock, with scattered
GOLDENEYE. There were about 15 TUNDRA SWANS there. Two SNOWY OWLS were seen
on the main crossroad but we did not go as far as Horne's ferry. There
continue to be RED-BREASTED and COMMON MERGANSERS in the ferry channel."
OTHER SIGHTINGS
Cartwright Point, Kingston {page 49, quad N20}, 2 female Gray Morph SCREECH
OWLS were seen within 10 min. only 80 m. apart, on Mar. 25, one in the
nesting box, opposite #3 Woodpecker Lane and the other in a hollow tree
trunk behind our house at #14 The Point Rd..
Rose-Marie Burke reported on Mar 23: "At Perth Road today, on the way up the
highway there was a GREAT BLUE HERON at Collins' Lake and at my parents'
place east of Buck Lake there was a RED SHOULDERED HAWK flying and calling."
Chris Grooms reported: a MERLIN at the Donald Gordon Centre, Kingston and
BLUEBIRDS around Newburgh, [page 35, quad C53] on Mar. 23.
