There were many ducks today along the Grand River and Lake Erie (NOT frozen
over as reported by the media).
The Common X Barrow's Goldeneye was spotted in Caledonia, about 300 m
downstream from the bridge over the Grand River . It was almost exactly as
depicted by Sibley, page 100. Perhaps more vivid . Associated with Common
Goldeneye's and 2 female Buffleheads.

Directions: Caledonia is about 20 km south of Hamilton, along Hiway 6.
Coming from the north, cross the old bridge, turn left immediately along
Forfar St. which follows the river. We set our scope up across the street
from a house marked both 93 and 141 Forfar.(?).

Immediately east of the Nanticoke Power station on Lake Erie there has been
open water all winter. Today we got about 12 species of waterfowl including
a male Harlequin Duck. He spends most of his time underwater diving.
Associated with Common Goldeneyes. In contrast to Lake Ontario, we did not
see any Scoters or Longtails on Lake Erie. We saw our first swallows of
the year there over the lake. ? Northern Roughed Wings

Directions: From Caledonia, proceed southwest along Highway 6. Pass thru
Hagersville and turn left (south) along regional round 55. This takes you
to the Nanticoke hydro station, conspicuous by it's noxious emissions.
Immediately east of the hydro property is the Lakeshore Road which leads to
Peacock Point. The area between the power station and Peacock Point has
open water and many waterfowl. Scope recommended.
