OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE MONDAY MARCH 10 AT 4 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

March came in like a lion with lots of snow but very little change
in bird activity.

On March 8, 4 Purple Finches were at a feeder on Furlong Crescent in
Bridlewood and 20 Cedar Waxwings were seen along Rifle Rd near the
Hilda Rd feeder.

The first report of an Eastern Meadowlark comes from February 28
in Carleton Place along highway 7, approximately 5 km west of the
highway 7 highway 15 interchange. The bird was in the same
location again on March 3.

Going back to the last week of February, a visit to the Low_
Poltimore Rd in Québec on the 27th produced two flocks of Purple
Finches totalling 25 birds, 6 White_winged Crossbills, mostly
singing males, and good numbers of Common Ravens, Red_breasted
Nuthatches, Dark_eyed Juncos and a small numbers of Snow Buntings.

On the 25th, 2 Lapland Longspurs were in a manure spread along
Donald B Munro and Diamondview Rd in Carp.

Neither the HARLEQUIN DUCK nor the Barred Owl on the Rideau River
near the Rideau Tennis Club has been reported since the 22nd.

Reports from farther south along the Great Lakes indicate that
numbers of waterfowl and some migrant songbirds are building up
but the heavy snow and extremely cold temperatures have done
little to entice them further inland.

Thank_you. Good birding.
