At 7:30pm, Thursday, March 6th, 2003, this is the Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The Hotline is normally revised on Thursday nights, unless an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.
The Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch at Beamer Memorial Conservation Area in Grimsby was off to a great start on Saturday, March 1st with 8 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 4 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, and a PEREGRINE FALCON. In and around Lake Ontario, what open water remains has been good for waterfowl. At the Travelodge in Burlington, RING-NECKED DUCK, RUDDY DUCK, REDHEAD, and LONG-TAILED DUCK were reported. Nearby at Spencer Smith Park, a KING EIDER was spotted in a mixed flock of WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, SURF SCOTERS and BLACK SCOTERS. Other birds seen from Spencer Smith include RED-NECKED GREBE, HORNED GREBE, and RUDDY DUCK. Further along the lake, RED-NECKED GREBE, RING-NECKED DUCK, REDHEAD, CANVASBACK, LONG-TAILED DUCK, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, AMERICAN COOT, and WHITE-WINGED SCOTER were seen at the CCIW. Rounding out the waterfowl sightings, a blue phase SNOW GOOSE was at Sioux Lookout, and GADWALL, MALLARD, COMMON MERGANSER, HOODED MERGANSER, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, HORNED GREBE, LONG-TAILED DUCK, TRUMPETER SWAN, and RED-NECKED GREBE were reported from the Desjardins Canal. Other local reports include RED-SHOULDERED HAWK on Campbellville Road west of Highway #6, AMERICAN PIPIT at the Travelodge in Burlington, a COMMON RAVEN in the Redhill Valley, RUSTY BLACKBIRD at the Hopkins Tract, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD and LONG-EARED OWL at Bronte Provincial Park, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS behind Olympic Arena and at Shoreacres/Paletta Park, BROWN THRASHER at Valley Inn, and a PEREGRINE FALCON in downtown Hamilton. Out of town, two adult BALD EAGLES were reported from Port Maitland, TUFTED TITMOUSE and GREAT HORNED OWL were at Selkirk Provincial Park, small groups of GRAY PARTRIDGE were at Brantford Airport and on the 13th Concession Walpole, while EASTERN TOWHEE, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and RED-TAILED HAWK were reported from the Caledonia area. A trip from Hagersville to Long Point over the weekend was rewarding with 61 RED-TAILED HAWKS, three COOPER'S HAWKS, one NORTHERN GOSHAWK, four ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, one NORTHERN HARRIER, 11 AMERICAN KESTRELS, one GREAT HORNED OWL, 45 SHORT-EARED OWLS, three NORTHERN SHRIKES, 81 HORNED LARKS, 5 SONG SPARROWS, and 121 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS.
