Hi everyone,
Not much has changed in recent weeks with regard to species on the St.
Clair. Ice conditions change daily, and you have to find where the ducks
are hanging out.
Today I went to Sombra in mid afternoon to see a mass congregation of ducks
just south of the village. I picked out 3 PINTAIL DUCKS (2 males, 1
female). I assume these are wintering birds as I had a male here exactly 3
weeks ago. I also picked out the wintering WHITE-WINGED SCOTER. All the
other usual wintering species were here including a GADWALL. There were 35
Mute Swans here (far too many and increasing yearly). As well an immature
BALD EAGLE. (I counted 7 eagles on the river two weeks ago). Farther up
the river, yesterday was the wintering AMERICAN WIGEON (male) at Lambton
Generating Station. Farther up still, off Shell Oil at Corunna is another
large concentration of waterfowl. There was a female LONG-TAILED here. As
well there are a large number of COMMON GOLDENEYE, by far the most I've ever
seen wintering on the river. Several Glaucous Gulls are still around there.

Directions to Sombra and St. Clair River: Find Hwy 40 which runs N/S
between Sarnia and Wallaceburg. Turn west on Lambton Rd. 2 (Bentpath Line)
and take to
Sombra on the river. Sombra Bay is right in front of you. Fawn Island is
just to the south of the village. The St. Clair Parkway (Rd. 33) follows
the river along its length.
