Highlights of reports received February 13 through February 20 from the Niagara Frontier Region include HARLEQUIN DUCK, BALD EAGLE, SHORT-EARED OWL, WILD TURKEY and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD. February 15, the male HARLEQUIN DUCK that has been wintering on the Niagara River at Fort Erie, Ontario, was reported again at the second parking lot north of the marina. Also in the Fort Erie area, several WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS. BALD EAGLES were reported several times this week on the upper Niagara River. An adult and sub-adult at the iceboom, 4 eagles on Navy Island, and an adult a 2 sub-adults were seen from Grand Island, drifting downriver on a large ice floe. Also, 57 TUNDRA SWANS off Beaver Island State Park. During the evening of February 18, 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen again on Tonawanda Creek Road near the Burdick Road bridge in the Town of Royalton. This Sunday, February 23, there will be a BOS field trip to search for owls in Niagara County. Check the update [below] for details. This week in the Orleans County Town of Carlton, 23 WILD TURKEYS were reported along Yates-Carlton Townline Road, south of Route 18. Also very surprising, an apparent WILD TURKEY nest with 9 eggs, in a wooded area in Carlton. Wintering AMERICAN ROBINS continue to be widely reported. Typically the first robins of spring will not arrive until mid-March. The first flocks of BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS were noted this week in the Town of Tonawanda. Up to 10 at a feeder on Cleveland Drive and 20 cowbirds along Sheridan Drive. The monthly census at Sinking Ponds in East Aurora reported 23 species including AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, RED-BELLIED WDPKR., RED-BR. NUTHATCH, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 6 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, AMER. TREE SPARROW and SONG SPARROW. Other reports this week - At the dairy farm on Niagara- Orleans Countyline Road, 40 HORNED LARKS, SNOW BUNTING and 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS in breeding plumage. And at Fort Niagara State Park, over 50 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, in close to shore, below the main parking lot. Dial-a-Bird will be updated Thursday evening, February 27.
