Yesterday, Tuesday, February 18th, at 11:45 a.m. Marc Latrémouille and I saw
the male Varied Thrush on the feeder at #383 Prinyer's Cove at the east end
of Prince Edward County. There was a Red-bellied Woodpecker at this feeder as
well.
At Amherst Island between 5 and 6:00 p.m. Marc and I saw four Short-eared
Owls and two Snowy Owls. One Short-eared was on the left just before the
firehall, drive a short distance to the stop sign once you leave the ferry
then drive straight ahead about one kilometre. Continue on this road (Stella
RD) then turn left (east) on the South Shore Road until this road turns
sharply to the left (north). There were at least three Short-eared and two
Snowy Owls along the north/south road bordering the KFN property at the
easternmost part of the island. The Short-eared owls at the eastern end of
the island gave us a spectacular show. They were flying all around us, at one
point one checked us out by floating directly over our heads at less than
three meters!
Thanks to Bruce Ripley for his post of February 11th alerting us of the
presence of these Owls.

The Thrush can be found at Civic Address # 383 Prinyer's Cove Crescent. It is
mandatory that birders park well off the road and not block any driveways.
The bird can be best viewed by approaching no closer than the back of the
double garage [walk along the left side of the garage] where it can be
viewed at the feeder on the RIGHT side of the house.
Directions: From Picton, take Highway 33 for about 10 km to almost the
Glenora Ferry, then turn onto County Road 7 and follow to
Lake-on-the-Mountain and a further 17 km to Prinyer's Cove Crescent (right
on a corner).

Amherst Island is located 16 Km. west of Kingston. Take exit 593 off the 401
and drive south on highway 4. Turn right on highway 33 for 300m and you will
find the ferry on your left. The ferry leaves the mainland EXACTLY on the
half hour and leaves the island on the hour (until 1 a.m.). Cost is $5 round
trip, there are no gas stations on the island.
