At 1:15pm, Thursday, February 13th, 2003, this is the
Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The
Hotline is normally revised on Thursday nights, unless
an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area. 

The Bird Study Group meets this Monday, February 17th
at 7:30pm. This month's meeting will include a film
screening - George Drought's "Jewel of Ontario - The
Petewawa River". The meeting will take place at
Shaklee Canada, 952 Century Drive, Burlington.

Now on to the birds...

It was a relatively quiet week, which is to be
expected in light of the bitter cold. However, many
birders braved the cold in Haldimand Region, where the
following sightings were reported: RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER and BELTED KINGFISHER in Cayuga, eight
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS (4 light phase and 4 dark phase) at
various locations, NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, AMERICAN
ROBIN, LONG-EARED OWL, GOLDEN CROWNED KINGLET,
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, and CEDAR WAXWING at Selkirk
Provincial Park, BALD EAGLE, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD,
SONG SPARROW, COMMON MERGANSER, HOODED MERGANSER,
HORNED GREBE, GLAUCOUS GULL, HORNED LARK, NORTHERN
HARRIER, and COOPER'S HAWK at Nanticoke, as well as
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, seven SHORT-EARED OWLS, six
NORTHERN HARRIERS, and HORNED LARK at the Fisherville
Raptor Preserve.

Closer to home, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen at Pier
25, HORNED LARK, AMERICAN KESTREL and RED-TAILED HAWK
were reported from Bayview Park in Burlington,
PEREGRINE FALCONS were spotted over Old York Road and
at Highway 20 and Green Mountain Road, an adult male
KING EIDER was visible from the foot of Fruitland Road
in Stoney Creek, RING-NECKED DUCK and BLACK SCOTER
turned up at Spencer Smith Park, CAROLINA WREN, DOWNY
WOODPECKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, AMERICAN ROBIN and
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH were seen or heard at McMaster
University, and TRUMPETER SWAN, GADWALL, GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, COMMON MERGANSER, and HOODED MERGANSER were
reported from the Desjardins Canal in Dundas. 

This week's yard reports include RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER in Grimsby, and EASTERN SCREECH OWL,
COOPER'S HAWK, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and BROWN CREEPER in
Vanessa, which is south and west of Brantford. 

Out of town, 6 BALD EAGLES were seen in the Niagara
region across from Chippewa Battlefied Park.
