Took the 4:30pm ferry to Amherst Island to find my first SHORT-EARED OWL for the year and found six. One was sitting on the brush pile directly behind the firehall and the other five were seen along the road bordering the KFN property at the easternmost part of the island. Also observed two SNOWY OWLS and one GREAT HORNED OWL, both close to the KFN property. At one point I had a SNOWY OWL on a phone pole, a GREAT HORNED OWL on a fence post and a SHORT-EARED OWL flying, all in the same field of view. Quite exciting.
Good Birding Bruce Ripley Amherst Island [P36, D55 & 56] Located 16 km. west of Kingston. Exit off the 401 at exit 593 and drive south to the very end. Turn right on hwy. 33 and drive 300 m. until you see the sign to the ferry. The ferry leaves the mainland on the half hour and leaves the island on the hour. Cost is $5.00 round trip. There are no gas stations on the island. There are restrooms on the ferry, but not on the island. The K.F.N. property is at the easternmost part of the island. To reach the firehall, drive a short distance to the stop sign once you leave the ferry. Drive straight ahead about 1 kilometre and you will see the firehall on the left.
