At 11:30am, Thursday, January 30th, 2003, this is the
Hamilton Naturalists' Club Birding Hotline Report. The
Hotline is normally revised on Thursday nights, unless
an unusual bird turns up in the Hamilton area.

The NORTHERN HAWK OWL continues to be seen with some
regularity at the corner of the Reid Sideroad and
Guelph Line in Campbellville. When your reporter went
to see the bird this past weekend, the car pool
parking lot was filled with observers who had
travelled from near and far. For those with access to
the Internet, there are some great photos of the bird
on the OFO website at www.ofo.ca.

A trip to LaSalle Marina to search for the
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was successful on Saturday, and a
trip later in the week produced SONG SPARROW, NORTHERN
MOCKINGBIRD, NORTHERN FLICKER, and BALD EAGLE.

In and around the RBG, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, SONG
SPARROW, AMERICAN ROBIN, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and
HAIRY WOODPECKER were seen from the North Shore
Trails, while CEDAR WAXWING, BROWN THRASHER, GRAY
CATBIRD, SONG SPARROW, SWAMP SPARROW, LINCOLN'S
SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, BELTED KINGFISHER,
WOOD DUCK, and GREEN-WINGED TEAL were reported from
the Hendrie Valley.

Other local reports include COOPER'S HAWK in a Dundas
yard, three dozen AMERICAN ROBINS, PILEATED
WOODPECKER, and RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER near the
Hamilton Region Conservation Authority headquarters,
NORTHERN SHRIKE, PILEATED WOODPECKER, WINTER WREN, and
SWAMP SPARROW behind Olympic Arena, SHORT-EARED OWL
and NORTHERN HARRIER on the Stoney Creek mountain, a
small flock of SNOW BUNTINGS at Pier 26, HARLEQUIN
DUCK and an albino COMMON GOLDENEYE at the foot of
Guelph Line in Burlington, two BALD EAGLES on the ice
in the harbour and one flypast on White Church Road,
SNOW BUNTING on Haldibrook Road, and a flock of WILD
TURKEYS on Westover Road north of the 8th Concession
in Flamborough.

Out of town, 20 SHORT-EARED OWLS were reported from
Fisherville, AMERICAN PIPIT and more SHORT-EARED OWLS
were reported on Link Road near Cayuga, six GRAY
PARTRIDGE were spotted at Brantford Airport, and two
dozen WILD TURKEYS were just west of Oak Park Road and
Highway 403.

Last but not least, while making an outdoor ice rink
during the evening, a birder in Caledonia has been
accompanied at different times by a pair of GREAT
HORNED OWLS and an EASTERN SCREECH OWL. The same
birder reports COOPER'S HAWK, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, and
MERLIN patrolling his feeders during the day.

Be sure to let us know about your sightings. Leave
your name, telephone number, as well as the time and
date of your call. Sightings can also be reported by
e-mail.

GOOD BIRDING!
