Hi all!
Sorry for the delay in posting an update on these birds, the OFO
meeting and my exam this morning have kept me from the computer.
I had killer views of the YB Chat at LaSalle park for about 5 minutes at
10:15 am yesterday(Thu Jan 16)- it flew across the path from the heavy cover
into the big patch of bittersweet(?), but I never saw it eat(alas no video).
Other birds here included Song Sparrow and N.Mockingbird and a lot of RN
Ducks.
Next I went to Hendrie Valley and found the Lincoln's Sparrow and Gray
Catbird, last reported by Wolfgang Luft a week ago.The Lincoln's Sparrow.
was further along in the heavier cover along with a Song and several
White-throated Sparrows. At the boardwalk were several N.Cardinals and Am.
Tree Sparrows and this is where the Gray Catbird popped up.
At Desjardins canal I finally got the Wood Duck(my 3rd or 4th try) and a
Belted Kingfisher.
After switching vehicles at the garage(the Windstar had a flat), I
decided to try for the Snowy Owls reported Jan 6 by Karl and Marienna
Egressy. I found a classic 1st. year female(per Sibley) on Wellington County
Rd #16 about 1 km. north of Sideroad #25 at 2:30pm. It sat on a pole, just
south of #7247 on the east side from where it flew behind the big green
barn(video camera still at home). This is south of Hwy# 109 closer to Arthur
than Orangeville. I drove slowly around the "block" but saw no others, nor
any other birds in the area.
As our meeting was not 'til 7pm - I thought I may as well scour my old
stomping grounds up around Flesherton, but found only 1 Kestrel and 2
Red-tails in all my travels - some of the snow banks were as high as my
camper's roof - just like the 60's.
Cheers!! Maris
