Subject: Pine Warbler at Niagara Falls

Today, late in the afternoon after the Port Colborne CBC, Alan Smith, Brian
Ahara and I birded the Niagara River from Fort Erie to Niagara Falls.

In the River at Fort Erie off Jaeger Rocks were 5 White-winged Scoter, and 1
male Surf Scoter. Off the second parking lot north of Nicholls Marina was a
female Black Scoter, and at the foot of Gilmore Avenue was another male Surf
Scoter with three Horned Grebe. There was no sign this afternoon of the
male Harlequin Duck seen earlier this month. Approximately 2 km north of
Fort Erie along the Niagara Parkway were approximately 100 Tundra Swans with
2 Mute Swans nearby close to shore. Waterfowl was abundant in this area
with a large raft of 1500-1800 Greater Scaup, 400 Canvasback, 100 Redhead,
along with smaller numbers of seven other duck species.

As we were studying two Lesser Black-backed Gulls on the breakwall north of
the control structure above the Falls in Niagara Falls, two lady birders
from Rochester came over and excitedly told us about a Pine Warbler they had
just observed in the pine trees immediately south of the control structure.
We quickly made our way there and relocated the bird in the first group of
three close together pine trees just north of the staff building in front of
the control structure. The bird was in company of 8-9 Golden-crowned
Kinglet and numerous Black-capped Chickadee. As we were leaving this area a
Peregrine Falcon flew over our heads and over the control structure.
