OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE TUESDAY DECEMBER 31 AT NOON
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
Reports from Sunday December 29 include at least 6 White-winged
Crossbills flying over the Anderson Rd trail west of the P19
parking lot, including one male in full flight song. This is the
first report of crossbills in the area this year.
An adult Bald Eagle was seen flying up the Ottawa River from the
ridge in the Britannia Conservation Area but no other birds of
note were reported from this location on the 29th.
Along the Steel Line there was a Northern Shrike and over 2000
Snow Buntings. A Belted Kingfisher flew over Walkley Rd at the
Airport Parkway it is probably frequenting the open waters in
the nearby Sawmill Creek and a Snowy Owl was found along Wall Rd
west of Frank Kenney Rd, north of Navan.
From Saturday December 28, an Eastern Meadowlark was at 550 chemin
des Dominicans off highway 148 west of Aylmer Québec and a Bald
Eagle was in the same vicinity along chemin de la Sapiniere.
Six Brown-headed Cowbirds were discovered at a feeder in Alta
Vista at 1973 High Ridge Rd off Billings Rd. The feeder can be
viewed from Billings Park, which is a public area behind the
house. A Brown Thrasher was reported at this feeding on the 27th
but was not seen in the next day. A Great-Horned Owl has been
roosting in the Alta Vista area for the past 3 weeks. It has
occasionally been seen in the coniferous trees along Norway
Crescent.
On Thursday December 26, the Pakenham/Arnprior Christmas Bird
Count produced a preliminary total of 48 species. Record high
numbers of Wild Turkeys, Common Ravens and American Robins were
reported as well as a good winter rarity a Field Sparrow found
in a small tract of trees separating a beaver pond from the Ottawa
River at Goodwin's Bay. Both a Bald Eagle and a Golden Eagle were
spotted on the count and a Short-eared Owl was found along Dwyer
Hill Rd. Specific locations for these birds were not provided.
From December 25, a slightly belated report of 4 Bald Eagles, 2
adults and 2 juveniles, comes from the highway 16 between
Middleville and Hopetown south of Almonte. They were perched in a
tree along the highway.
There have been recent reports of some local rarities such as the
female HARLEQUIN DUCK on the Rideau River. Please, any current
and continuing information regarding the presence of interesting
birds is appreciated for the bird status line.
Many thanks to everyone who reported in 2002 and here's wishing
good birding in the New Year.
Thank you, good birding.
