FWIW I did some work on hacking this in as a sort of filtering pipe. I ran up against a problem where I needed both a protocol and an instance of a protocol as separate things if I remember. This was a couple of years ago so I may have forgotten. The lua bit seemed easy enough. -- Alex Bligh
