Charaka Samhita describes Ayurveda as a progressive, dynamic and inclusive science of life, which reviews, assimilates and utilizes knowledge even from unfamiliar sources.
This inclusive and investigative spirit looks for improved understanding of Ayurveda, and careful integration with biomedical sciences. This requires very sensitive, complex trans-disciplinary studies, because the epistemology, principles, concepts and categories of the two knowledge systems are different. Such research will certainly improve communication across knowledge systems and may well provide new path-breaking insights into both knowledge systems. Integrative approaches in medicine are now gaining global acceptance. Governments and universities in several different countries have established centres for integrative medicine. In India, such integration must be AYUSH centric, so that modern science and technology are used to better understand theory and practice of Indian Medical Heritage. I-AIM is a Center of Excellence (CoE) in Ayurveda supported by the Department of AYUSH. As a part of CoE initiatives, we are pleased to announce a special opportunity for MD (Ayu) candidates who are interested in pursuing trans-disciplinary research. Selected candidates will have the opportunity to work under the guidance of eminent biomedical scientists from leading research institutions. Number of Ph.D. research fellowships: 12. Consolidated fellowship amount: Rs 18,000/month + medical benefits. Duration: 3 year full time residential programme at I-AIM, Bangalore. Advantages: Ph.D. research fellowship and registration with recognized university. Selected students will also be enrolled in I-AIM’s ‘Vaidya Scientist Fellow Program’. Trans-disciplinary research: Through an interactive process in consultation with research guides, selected candidates will be assigned suitable projects in the areas of biochemistry, microbiology, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, immunology, pharmacology, pharmaceutics and/or related biomedical sciences. Structure: Course work, research project and extension. Eligibility: Candidates under 30 years of age with MD (Ayu) from any recognized university. Those with published work in peer reviewed journals will be given preference. Selection: Strictly on merit through Written Test followed by Interview.
