  Yeah.  :-(  In general, without logs or similar, it is impossible to diagnose 
this sort of problem by DNS results alone.  Unless zone data is broken in some 
obvious way, this is going involve what is happening within the BIND process.  
(Even if the root cause is external, it is going through BIND, so we have to 
start there.)

  What is your logging config like?  Maybe post an extract of your logging{} 
block?

  Sometimes BIND is trying to say what is wrong, but the log config is throwing 
it away.
