I don't have a whole lot of options there. The clients are a mixture of Windows and Apple products.. about all I can do (or at least all I know how to do) is use DHCP to give them a domain name and point them to a resolver.
My understanding is: * Apple devices should use mDNS for ".local" domain names automatically. (Not sure if it will fall back to DNS if there is no answer.) * A quick test I did on Windows 11 suggests it sends mDNS and DNS queries in parallel. * In Linux the default behaviour will likely depend on your distro, but can be changed by modifying /etc/nsswitch.conf. * I'm not sure about Android.
