My understanding is:

 * Apple devices should use mDNS for ".local" domain names
   automatically. (Not sure if it will fall back to DNS if there is no
   answer.)
 * A quick test I did on Windows 11 suggests it sends mDNS and DNS
   queries in parallel.
 * In Linux the default behaviour will likely depend on your distro,
   but can be changed by modifying /etc/nsswitch.conf.
 * I'm not sure about Android.
