Look at DNSPerf. It's an open source tool for benchmarking DNS servers. It has a component called resperf, specifically for resolvers. You could try to use that to find out how far you can push your resolvers. Make sure to measure the packet rate and the bandwidth from your resolvers towards the Internet. However, I would also caution you on the use of firewalls in front busy resolvers. If the firewalls try to keep state for every UDP packet traversing them, they will quickly fall over.
