Every once in a while we get someone complaining because one of the big sites (Ebay?) 
refuses to accept their email due the "generic" (as defined by that site's 
policies) nature of our PTR.   We typically ignore that because we've never seen this 
complaint from other mail servers and no one has ever provided a business use for the one 
site that is complaining.

"We typically ignore that because we've never seen this complaint from other mail servers" is nonsense, you just don't know why soemtimes mails not get delivered or silently dropped we are one of them, if you are coming with a generic PTR and not have a matching SPF policy and/or listed on well known DNSWL it's safe to assume you are a enduser machine with no business sending mail to a MX or a admin not understanding http://www.emailtalk.org/ptr.aspx and care about your outgoing mail
