Another option might be to use named-journalprint and grab the last SOA
from the output. I don't know which is faster... actually, let's test...
$ time named-compilezone -j -f raw -o - cam.ac.uk /spool/bind/zs/cam |
awk '/ IN SOA / { print $7 }'

awk '/ loaded serial / { print $5 }'
