This is one of the things that lots of people don't understand and often 
misconstrue...

If you do a "dig @x.y.z.a foo.com +trace", the only thing that x.y.z.a is used 
for is root discovery.

Once that response comes back, dig wanders off to the roots to perform the 
trace.
