I just relax and let the frostbite happen... But no, I have used a thick film of "Warm Skin" successfully for many years, down to -18*F with a (mercifully) light breeze. Many pharmacies carry it (but some don't, so call in advance if you'd need to take a special trip). My commute in the cold has been only 4 miles, so I cannot vouch for its effect over longer distances if you're not generating a lot of body heat. Many of us who also cross-country ski have used it for a long time, skiing for many miles, but also generating a lot of internal warmth. It's a little greasy, so do your best to keep it off eyeglasses and goggles.
There's another product popular with skiers call "Face Tape." Fontana *may* carry it. I consider it t be a little pricey. Long-distance ski racers use it, so it stays on for over an hour and a half, up to three hours. (I believe Fontana also carries Warm Skin.) It stays on sweaty skin pretty well, if applied to clean dry skin before you start to sweat. Finally, there are various anti-blister foot tapes (an early brand is Moleskin). I have used them for skiing & bike commuting, and they can become loose and fall off when you sweat. For biking at a moderate commute pace, they keep their stick-on power longer. These need to be applied to clean, dry skin, so they don't seem compatible with Warm Skin. Best of luck staying reasonably comfortable!
