I just spoke to a friend of mine that used to be a detective in Montana and
she explained that where she worked, pawn shops are required to hold them
for 30 days from the time they have been pawned, to give time for people to
report and recover them. The pawn shops are also required to enter in any
serial numbers on the merchandise into a special database that the police
have access to.

In this case, it worked exactly like it was supposed to: the pawn shop
entered the serial number into the database, which then sent an alert to
the police officer who was working on Carlos' case because the serial
number matched.

The pawn shop returned the bike, and the pawn shop will seek restitution
from the person who pawned the bike. They paid $200 for the bike, so they
can bring a small claims against that person--they have their name and
contact info.
